Tangled Carrot Farm is a small, diversified operation located in Montana's Bitterroot Valley cultivating a half-acre of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers while restoring three additional acres into a drought-tolerant silvopasture of trees, shrubs, and grasses. We are committed to promoting sustainable farming practices and enhancing community connections through agriculture.

...the high tunnel doors were open!
We'll have many more snap peas in the weeks ahead! These are the last of the peas from the high tunnel and the next round of peas are growing strong outdoors!

As the weeks progress we'll have a short lull in farmatand produce and then the quantities will steadily rise through the season!

Next year we plan to have more consistent offerings! The farmstand will be ready instead of being built and I (farmer Sarah) will be finished with graduate school!

Rocky, the Matriarch of our flock.

She's flocking amazing 💫💥

Rocky arrived on our farm on April 7th, 2017!!!!

Year 1: She was evacuated from the farm due to the lolo peak wildfire and lost a toe

Year 2: Lived under a bin for over a month near a large compost pile (we thought she was dead and it was a BIG surprise when Joe went to turn the compost pile, picked up the stray bin, and Rocky popped out.

Year 3: Survived a mass massacre of chickens. It was the year the chickens had a 50 x 100 foot run built due to predator pressure

Year 4: The remaining members of our original flock began dying.

Year 5+: Became the Matriarch of the flock. Domineering. Will not allow a rooster to mount. Chooses the prime roasting spot in the coop. Pushes other chickens out of the way when food scraps or treats arrive.

Cheers to all the days we have left with Rocky!

Tested my sand germination table overnight to make sure it's in working order!

The temp was in the low-20's on the farm this morning and without any additional coverage the sand table was 50 degrees F!!! (The empty trays are to keep cats from using the sand table as a litter box in the winter).

This diy table is filled with wet sand and heat cables that provide consistent bottom heat for germination. I don't heat my high tunnel and this allows me to start plants earlier in the season.

Later this week I'll start germinating cold season crops like chard, spinach, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and more! They will get bottom heat from the table and will get additional insulation provided by row cover thrown over the top of the pvc pipes.

Throwback to the November day that our neighborhood elk herd hung out in our front yard.

They were inching closer and closer to the open farm gates when a car driving up the road spooked them.

It was an incredibly beautiful sight.

Just a beautiful abnormally warm and sunny January day without snow. Perfect for putting new plastic on the high tunnel.

2025. What a year!

We are so grateful to all our customers at the @stevihvfm Thank you for supporting our *tiny* family farm! You made this season worthwhile and one of the best seasons yet!

We'll excited for 2026 and will soon begin planning in earnest. For now, we have noisemakers from that we made at our wonderful Missoula Public Library abd will celebrate the last of 2025 at a kid friendly party that ends long before midnight!

My phone camera elevated the colors of tonight's aurora. They were a little more subtle, but no less beautiful.

Also, imagine Björk's song Aurora is playing...

Farm life is still in full force even though my posts have decreased post market season.

The last market is in full swing! I'll be here until 5pm with the loveliest wreaths, the last of the tomatoes and what's left of the 25lb of sweet potatoes that came to market!

This Saturday is the last market for the season with @stevihvfm! It has been a great season and I look forward to celebrating the joy of the Scarecrow festivities with you until 5pm!

I'll have wreaths, cornstalks, garlic bouquets, and braids that are perfect fall decor. I'll have garlic salt and powder! Joe is whipping up a fresh batch of spicy green chili salt now!

The flowers and basil haven't frosted and the cucumbers are holding on for dear life!

Come down and celebrate the changing of the season with me. I'm looking forward to hot tea and cozy snuggles with my family this fall and winter, but before I get there, I'm excited to spend one more Saturday at market with the best customers a farmer could ask for!

Introducing "The Farmer's Nightcap" an herbal tea blend featuring hops, calendula, tulsi basil, and chamomile.

I was first introduced to a similar tea by Farmer Paul of Killarney Farm in North Idaho when I was a farm apprentice in 2010. His was heavy on the hops with a dash of chamomile.

My blend is a a beautiful floral hoppy mix. Perfect for relaxing evenings.

I'll be here in downtown Stevi until 2pm today with this tea, loads of tomatoes, the last of the corn and more!

News to celebrate: 📢 I have less than a year left of graduate school, AND we completed our multi-year NRCS EQIP grant!!!!

Last August, I (Sarah) quietly started graduate school in the thick of farm season—unsure if it was the right time or the right path. Nearly a year later, I’m still juggling a lot (especially with summer courses), but I’m also incredibly grateful I took the leap.

In summer 2026, I’ll graduate with an M.A. in Transformative Food Systems from Prescott College. This program has expanded my understanding of how to build more just, resilient, and sustainable food systems—knowledge I apply daily in my off-farm role, where I support system-wide sustainable food initiatives across our hospital system.

It’s also helped me see my own small farm through a new lens—deepening my appreciation for conservation work and the impact of programs like the EQIP grant, which supports environmental stewardship on the land.This post is a project completed for my program.

This journey is far from over, but I'm excited about where it's leading.

Tomorrow: Saturday 5/17. We WILL be at market with beautiful plants ready for your garden! We'll have a wide variety of tomatoes, including heirlooms and early producers, peppers, swiss chard, basil, bareroot raspberries!, & more.

Time dependent, we *might* have some greens 💚 Salad mix is ready to harvest, but cover crop seed accidentally got seeded into it. The result is a more time-consuming harvest and wash.... Oops!

It's still busy over here, but these plants will be happier with you than kept on the farm!!!!

Our anticipated market arrival is early June!
We're attempting to slow down a little this spring as we head towards the finish line of our multi-year Environmental Quality Incentives Program Grant. This grant provided some funding for our high tunnel and remediation of our back pasture. We're about 200 trees away from finishing 🙌🏽

Despite our market absence until later this season, we've been busy on the farm prepping our half acre of market garden and caring for our additional acreage:

-> 3 dead/dying cottonwood trees removed
-> Fencing repaired
-> Barn roof repaired
-> Perennial Flower Garden weeded
-> Rebuilt rock bench
-> Planted new perennial flower perimeter
-> Maxed out seedling space in the high tunnel
-> Bought lumber for a farmstand
-> Planned fencing for the front of the property near the future farmstand
-> Planted cold hardy crops in the fields
-> Prepped ground for hoophouse build
-> Set up a mason bee house gifted by a dear friend
-> had 17 pairs of little feet create a path in the high tunnel through the cover crop as they ran wild on the farm during my 40th birthday celebration

Now we just need to plant 200 trees in the back pasture, 100 more trees and bushes around the property, build a fence, build a hoophouse, build a farmstand, and we'll be ready to give up our Saturdays to hang with you at market!

The greening of Montana is wonderful to see!

For all of you that love putting your hands into bags of rice, oats, warm sand....

This is a mix of peas, oats, and some very old hairy vetch seed. A cover crop for the high tunnel to suppress weeds, build soil health, and add organic matter.

And so we begin! The high tunnel is comfortably warm at 84 degrees. The chickens have officially been banned from the tunnel after destroying the overwintered greens that were meant to feed my family. A cover crop will be planted next week, and the seedling tables will soon be filled!

Our daughter thinks the tunnel smells like rotting tomatoes, and our three year old son wants to know why we don't have any tomatoes to harvest yet!

I think it smells like dirt, opportunity, and sunshine in here, and I can't wait to get some seeds in the soil very soon 🥦🥬🥒🫑🍅🌽🌶🥕🌱🌻🌺🌹🌸
